A Summer Storm - Poem
67
Poem's Background
I have always enjoyed the beauty of summer storms. They cool the earth, they quench its thirst and provide brilliant lightning shows. This poem I wrote over our Christmas break up at my Parents house at Flaxton in Queensland, high in the mountain range. I sat on their front porch, listening to the rain falling on the tin roof with my note book in hand watching cars pass on the mountain road through the dripping trees in their front yard. It was so beautiful and peaceful.
A Summer Storm | Poem
Grey sky looms
Above the bleak power lines
That swing like the delicate
Strands of a spider web
Caught in a summer storm.
The wind blows
Tree tops bend like court couriers
That wave to and fro
As if a sea's surf has come
Barreling o'er the shore.
Cars scuttle past
On the wet road like soldier crabs
Too busy to stop
To feel the storm's fury
Upon their brittle shells.
Slanting rain falls
On oil sleek roads creating new streams
To rise beside the bitumen
Which if left well alone
Will become another riverbed.
An ant scurries
Over wet cement to find its nest
As gurgling sounds of water rush down
Gutter pipes and into rising reservoirs
Of H2O beneath the soggy wind swept land.

I love the cars as crabs metaphor. It is so original! Great capture of a rainstorm giving modern technology the attributes of animals. Power line spider webs is a first for me. Cheers.
